Marijuana use by US college students up, highest in 35 years – Wellness News

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. college students are employing marijuana at the highest prices in 35 years, according to a report released Thursday.

About 43% of complete-time college students stated they utilized some type of pot at least after in the previous year, up from 38%, a University of Michigan survey identified. About 25% stated they did so in the preceding month, up from 21%.

The most current figures are the highest levels observed in the annual survey considering the fact that 1983.

About six% of college students stated they utilized marijuana 20 or much more occasions in the previous month. For adults the exact same age who weren’t enrolled in college, the figure was 11%.

“It is the frequent use we’re most worried about” since it really is linked to poor academic efficiency and can be detrimental to mental overall health, stated John Schulenberg, a single of the Michigan researchers.

College-age adults are the greatest customers of marijuana than any other age group. Use amongst higher college students has been flat for a handful of years.

The 2018 findings are primarily based on responses from about 1,400 adults age 19 to 22, such as 900 who have been complete-time college students and about 500 who have been not.

The survey only has comparable information on college children going back to 1980. So it does not say how popular marijuana use was in the 1960’s and 1970’s — a time when marijuana use on college campuses was thought of widespread.

Marijuana use has been increasing in college-age children for much more than a decade. Schulenberg stated it appears to be tied to views about threat — in the early 1990s, about 3-quarters of young adults stated pot was risky. But final year it was down to 22%.

The survey also identified about 11% of college students stated they vaped marijuana in the preceding month — much more than double the figure in the 2017 survey.
