3 Athletes That Recommend CBD

Since 2018, the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from its list of prohibited substances. CBD is one of over 100 different cannabinoids that occur naturally in the cannabis plant. In layman’s terms, CBD has many of the same potential benefits as THC, but without the psychoactive effects and without showing up on a drug test.

Research shows promising outcomes in treating the impacts of athletic competition with CBD. Athletes around the world are endorsing the use of CBD while promoting the health benefits associated with it. Here are just a few athletes that are helping others focus on what matters.

1. Megan Rapinoe

Megan Rapinoe soared to absolute superstardom in 2019, with her epic performance during the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Although her name is usually associated with the iconic pose of her arms outstretched, Rapinoe captured the title of FIFA Women’s Player of the Year, making her the first U.S. women’s player to receive the award since Carli Lloyd in 2016.

Rapinoe believes that only good can come when active and retired athletes like herself vouch for more natural options for body discomfort than what is on the shelves at your local drug store. Megan sees the benefit of not only persuading consumers and sports fans but also helping to de-stigmatize CBD products. She is a true advocate for educating people about the acceptability of relief alternatives in leagues.

“I think that there are a lot of athletes very curious about CBD — I think generally as an athlete, you’re looking at the next piece of technology, whether it’s a wearable, how you can recover better, or just what you can do to get that edge,” said Rapinoe. “And certainly I think the shift for athletes has been towards more natural products and products that have a more holistic approach, so CBD falls right into that obviously.”

2. Rob Gronkowski

Throughout an NFL career that spanned nearly a decade, the name Rob Gronkowski is synonymous with numerous nicknames and three Super Bowl titles. During his career, Gronk underwent nine surgeries and battled countless injuries as the weekly on-field impacts he absorbed took its toll.

These injuries dealt a blow to more than his body. Gronk suffered from mood changes, which ultimately sealed the deal to walk away from the game he loved for so many years.

“I was not in a good place. Football was bringing me down. And I didn’t like it. I was losing that joy in life, like the joy. I really was. I was fighting through it. I knew what I signed up for. I knew what I was fighting through. I knew I just had to fix myself.”

His father was actually the person to first introduce CBD cream, similar to a foot renewal cream, to rub on a foot injury. Gronk said that was the moment where he realized he finally got the type of instant relief he was looking for and even went on to say he thinks using CBD could have helped with the discomfort he dealt with on a regular basis as an NFL player.

3. Gabby Douglas

Douglas was the first African-American gymnast in Olympic history to become the Individual All-Around Champion, and the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympic games.

“My experiences in using CBD have led me to believe that I could have been more pain-free throughout my gymnastics career if CBD had been allowed,” added Douglas. “I am glad that athletes across all Olympic sports will now have the opportunity to use these products and hopefully experience their benefits.”

Inflammation is a normal body reaction to any swelling but excess inflammation can cast a negative impact on sports performance. There are a lot of things that can get in the way of you meeting your athletic potentials, such as injury, pain, stress, or anxiety. Each of these problems is likely to arise in the life of any athlete, no matter how great they truly are.

Consider adding CBD to your athletic recovery program like adding oils to your nutritional shakes or applying topicals over your disturbed muscles. Professional athletes do it, so why not give it a try!
